Stars, Bibs and Selected: what the guide gives
The MICHELIN Guide lists 54 restaurants for Chiang Mai and its surroundings, and its distinctions there are 18 Bib Gourmand, for good quality, good value cooking, and 36 Selected Restaurants, for good cooking.12 No Chiang Mai entry carries a star.
Stars exist in Thailand, but elsewhere. The guide's 2026 edition for the whole country lists 2 three-star, 8 two-star and 33 one-star restaurants, along with 137 Bib Gourmand and 288 Selected.7 TAT notes that Sorn in Bangkok became the country's first three-star restaurant.8
In Chiang Mai the honest version of the search is Bib Gourmand street food. TAT describes the Bib Gourmand as a rating for good quality food at medium-range prices, and the city's street stalls with the award are cheap even by that measure.3 That makes the list more useful to a hungry traveler than any star.

How Chiang Mai joined the guide
Chiang Mai is a recent addition. In 2019 TAT announced that the guide's 2020 edition would cover Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Phang Nga, showcasing three regional food scenes.16 When that edition came out, its Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand section listed 17 Bib Gourmand restaurants and 33 rated Michelin Plate.17 The move brought the cooking of the old Lanna capital into the same guide as the street food of Bangkok.
The list has changed since. Today the guide's own Chiang Mai pages show 18 Bib Gourmand and 36 Selected, and the old Plate label no longer appears among the distinctions.2 The list changes between editions, and an old guidebook or blog post can send you to a shop that is no longer on it.
TAT ties the city's place in the guide to its produce, pointing to the Royal Project sites around Chiang Mai as a source of the freshest ingredients for its kitchens.18 Kinlum Kindee in San Sai, for one, cooks with produce from its own garden.19

The street food stalls on the Bib list
The street food stalls on Chiang Mai's Bib Gourmand list all sit at the guide's lowest price level.456 Roti Pa Day stands in front of Wat Mahawan on Thapae Road Soi 4 and cooks from 18:30 to midnight every evening; the guide recommends the roti filled with egg and banana.2313
Lung Khajohn Wat Ket, opposite Wat Ket Karam, specialises in khao kriap pak mo, steamed rice dumplings with fresh coconut milk, from 06:00 to 14:30.109 Tue Ka Ko Na Prince on Kaeonawarat Road fries taro to order with sweet chilli sauce and peanuts, and closes once it sells out.21
Sanpakoi Kanomjeen, established in 1977 and found at Thongkam Market, serves khanom chin rice noodles with curries from 11:00 to 23:00.1514 Two noodle shops join them on the Bib list: Khao Soi Mae Sai for khao soi and Guay Jub Chang Moi Tat Mai for kuai chap.2425 Between them they cover breakfast, lunch, dinner and a late sweet, which is all the structure a food day needs.

More cheap kitchens the guide likes
Across the full Chiang Mai list, 6 kitchens are classed Street Food, 3 Noodles and 15 Northern Thai.30 Nam Ngiao Yong, a stall at Siri Wattana Market, is one of the Selected street food entries, serving khanom chin nam ngiao with a tangy tomato broth and pork ribs.31
By price, 18 of the 54 are marked as on a budget and 28 as a moderate spend; only 3 are marked spare no expense.201 The guide also tags 17 places as good for eating like a local and 13 as family friendly.32
TAT adds Mae Hia Friday Market to the picture, as a place to see regional cooking recognised in the Michelin Guide.22 For a traveler that is the useful shift: the guide is a map of good, cheap food rather than a list of fine dining rooms. Use it the way locals use a favorite noodle stall: as a reason to cross town for one dish.
The food walk that stops at the list
The page sells a short guided walk built around these kitchens. It runs 105 minutes to 2 hours, in a private or small group with a guide in English and Thai, and meets in front of the Museum of Broken Relationships on Tha Pae Road, from $29. It has 181 reviews averaging 4.93.
Its listed stops are Warorot Market, Thana Ocha Noodle for a 40-minute tasting and Lung Khajohn Wat Ket for 20 minutes, ending at Warorot or Nawarat Bridge. For lunch the listing names yen ta fo, dinosaur-shaped fried dough and khao kriab pak moh; for dinner, khao soi, sai ua and bua loy. Bring an appetite, but pace it across the stops; the walk is short and the tastings come quickly.
Read the stop list against the hours. Lung Khajohn Wat Ket closes at 14:30 and on Sunday, which fits the lunch option rather than the dinner one; ask the operator which stops your slot includes.9 Free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes the question risk-free.
Building your own guide-listed day
You can eat your way down the list on your own with a little planning. Start early at Lung Khajohn Wat Ket for rice dumplings, take a bowl of khao soi at Khao Soi Mae Sai before it closes at 16:00, then walk off lunch at Warorot Market.91112 In between, Tue Ka Ko Na Prince on Kaeonawarat Road is worth the detour for crisp taro, as long as you arrive before it sells out.21
Save the evening for the late kitchens. Sanpakoi Kanomjeen serves until 23:00 and Roti Pa Day starts cooking at 18:30, which puts a noodle dinner and a sweet roti within one night.1413 Sunday is the day to avoid: Lung Khajohn, Khao Soi Mae Sai and Sanpakoi all close.91114
Carry cash and small notes, expect queues at lunch and share plates to try more. Street stalls like these are simple places; the pleasure is in the food, not the setting.
Is a guided walk worth it?
If you only want the famous stalls, a map and the hours above will do. A guide earns their fee in other ways: ordering the right dishes at each stop, explaining what you are eating and adding places that are not on any list, like a noodle shop the guide knows well. For a first visit to Thailand, that context is worth as much as the food itself.
The walk also saves time. Up to 2 hours covers stops that would take you longer to find and queue for on your own, and the guide handles the ordering in Thai. On a short trip, that is the difference between seeing the list and eating from it.
For a longer evening with more dishes, the evening market tour this site books for its main page covers at least two markets and 8 or more dishes with hotel pickup, from $40. Pair the two: a guide-listed lunch walk and a market night.
