A Chiang Mai street food tour can mean a private car between evening markets, a red truck with 15+ tastings or a motorbike ride until late. Here is how the main ones differ, and where each falls short.

Quick answer, by evening
A Chiang Mai street food tour solves the first-night problem: you are hungry, the menus are in Thai and every stall looks good. A guide orders for you, explains what lands on the table and shows you how locals eat it. On the evening tour this site books, a leaflet of popular dishes comes with you so you can practise ordering in Thai yourself.
The format matters as much as the food. Some tours collect you from your hotel and drive between markets; others meet at a temple or a guesthouse and expect you to make your own way there. Group sizes run from your own party on a private walk to about ten guests on the larger evening tours.
None of the listings compared here can promise a fixed menu. Stalls change, sell out and close on their own days off, and one evening tour says plainly that its dishes vary from night to night. Treat any dish list as a sample of what you might eat rather than a contract, and you will enjoy the evening more.

The tour sold on this site is the simplest to plan. A local guide picks you up at your accommodation in the early evening, the group is capped at 8 and you travel between stops by private car and on foot. It visits at least two evening markets and serves at least 8 different dishes, savoury and sweet, then drops you back at about 9:30 to 10 pm.
The listing names kannom jin noodles, stewed pork leg, coconut dumplings and northern delicacies among the dishes, and bottled water, the tastings and dinner are included. Alcohol is not, though you can buy a drink on the way. It runs 2.5 hours, stretching towards 3 with a bigger group, and costs from $40.
With 870 ratings averaging 4.74, it carries the most reviews of any street food listing compared here. Two limits matter: the listing says it is not suitable for vegetarians, and it is not suitable for infants.

If quantity is the point, the songthaew tours promise the most. One rides a red truck between street eats and fresh markets for 4 hours with 15+ tastings and ends at Warorot Market by the Ping River, from $59. A similar 4-hour truck tour for up to 8 meets at Wat Lok Molee, from $63.
The motorbike tour is the late, lively option. Drivers carry you on the back of a scooter from about 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, and water, soda, beer and every dish are included, from $79. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
At the other end sits a walk of 105 minutes to 2 hours that starts on Tha Pae Road and tastes at stalls named in its listing, including Lung Khajohn Wat Ket, from $29. It suits a lunch or an early evening when you want depth rather than volume.

Travelling with fussy eaters or a dietary rule? The private tasting walk keeps the group to your own party, runs 3 hours with 10 food and drink tastings and includes vegetarian alternatives, from $75. There is no hotel pickup: you start at a guesthouse in town and the guide adds city highlights between stops.
Some evenings mix food with sightseeing. One after-dark trail spends 4 to 5 hours on temples such as Wat Chedi Luang, then tastes food at Tha Phae Gate and Chiang Mai Gate Market for an hour each, from $43. It asks for covered shoulders and knees and is not for children under 8.
A tuk-tuk tour of 4 hours takes up to 4 people past Chang Phuak Gate, Warorot and Ton Lam Yai markets, with half an hour at each. These hybrids give you fewer dishes but a better sense of the old city at night.
Read the dietary line before you read anything else. The evening market tours, both truck tours and the guided market walk all say they cannot cater for some diets: no vegetarians on the evening tours, no vegetarians, pescatarians or no-pork diets on the truck, and no vegan option on the walk.
Allergies are harder still at a street stall. The truck tour rules out shellfish, peanut and severe allergies, and the other truck listing adds anyone who cannot eat soy sauce. If an allergy is serious, a cooking class where you choose and handle every ingredient is a safer way to taste the same flavors.
Children are welcome on several tours, with price bands that differ. The evening tour this site books has a child band from 5 to 15, the truck tour from 3 to 12, and the motorbike tour seats infants on an adult's lap. Check the band before you book a family of four.
Pace yourself from the first stop. Guides on every format tend to keep plates coming, and the dish you love most may arrive last. Take a bite or two of each plate, share with the people beside you and leave rice for the end. Water between stops helps more than any soft drink, and a small appetite is the one thing a food tour cannot fix.
Ask questions as you eat. The guide is the reason you booked: ask what a herb is called, which market sells it in the morning and how a dish changes in the rainy months. Write down the names of the stalls you liked and the dishes you would order again, then go back on your own on a later night without a guide.
Tell the guide early about spice, and say it again at the next stop. Northern cooking draws much of its warmth from galangal and pepper and some of its character from bitter forest greens, but a chilli dip can still surprise you.1112 Use the evening to learn the words for mild and for no chilli, and you will order with far more confidence for the rest of the trip.
There is no single best food tour in Chiang Mai, only the right trade-off. Start with transport: if you want to be collected and returned, the evening market tours and the tuk-tuk tour include pickup, while the truck tours, the private walk and the Michelin walk meet you somewhere in town.
Then weigh hours against appetite. A short evening suits a first night after a long flight; a long one suits a dedicated food night planned around a lighter lunch. Every listing here offers a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before, which makes booking early low-risk.
Finally, look at price per hour rather than the headline figure. The evening tour from $40 includes your transport, while the private walk from $75 buys flexibility and a vegetarian option. Book the one whose limits you can live with.

Hotel pickup, two or more markets, 8+ dishes, and free cancellation up to a day ahead.
From about $29 to $79. The short Michelin walk is the cheapest compared here and the motorbike night tour the dearest; the evening tour with pickup starts from $40.
The evening market tours and the tuk-tuk tour. The site's evening tour collects you at your accommodation by private vehicle; a pickup outside the city may cost extra.
Mostly not. Only the private 3-hour walk lists vegetarian alternatives; the evening, truck and market walk tours say they cannot cater for some or all meat-free diets.
Between 8 and 15+, depending on the tour. The evening tour serves at least 8, the private walk 10 tastings and the truck tours 15+.
Water usually is, alcohol rarely. The motorbike tour includes beer; the evening tour includes bottled water and sells alcohol separately.
Mostly, yes. One truck tour says it runs in all weather and suggests an umbrella in the rainy season. The evening tour's policy lets the operator cancel for poor weather.
Around 10 or 11 pm. The evening market tour drops you at about 9:30 to 10 pm; the motorbike tour ends at about 11:00 pm.
