A Chiang Mai food tour that collects you at your hotel, takes a small group to the evening markets and keeps the northern dishes coming.
Often full 6 days before the date
Quick · your evening
The tour begins where you are staying. A local guide picks you up in the early evening, the group comes together, never more than 8, and you travel by private car between markets and on foot within them. There is no meeting point to find and no taxi to haggle for after dinner.
Over the next 2.5 hours, or close to 3 with a fuller group, you visit at least two evening markets and try at least 8 different dishes. The listing names kannom jin noodles, stewed pork leg, coconut dumplings and northern delicacies among them, and bottled water, the tastings and dinner are all included.
At about 9:30 to 10 pm you are dropped back at your accommodation, full. You may arrive with no idea what half the dishes are called and leave with a short list of favorites to order again on your own.
Why go with a guide
Chiang Mai street food is at its best after dark, and hardest to read on your first night. This small-group tour collects you at your accommodation, visits at least two evening markets and serves at least 8 dishes, savoury and sweet, in 2.5 hours. A leaflet of popular dishes helps you order in Thai long after the tour ends.
Up to 8 guests, hotel pickup and drop-off included.
Quick · why chiang mai
Northern Thai food is a cuisine of its own. TAT traces its influences to Myanmar, China and Lao PDR, and to the kingdoms of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya, and says the cooler north takes its warmth from galangal and peppers more than fresh chili.
The city has been in the MICHELIN Guide since its 2020 edition, and today the guide lists 54 restaurants in and around it, 18 of them with a Bib Gourmand. Several of those are simple street stalls at the guide's lowest price level.
Readers of Travel + Leisure put Chiang Mai at the top of Asia's 15 best cities in 2025, praising its people and its food. An evening of eating is the quickest way to see why.

I went with my husband and our kids and it ended up being just us; the guide made sure there was something for each of us at every stop.”
Quick · guest voices
The tour has 870 ratings averaging 4.74 across Viator and Tripadvisor, and 723 of them carry five stars. In the newest reviews on Viator, guests most often praise a knowledgeable guide, and many mention how much food there is, often with the advice to come hungry.
Guests praise the lessons as well as the food. Among those reviews, a few mention learning to order in Thai or to ask for food that is not spicy, and several describe a guide who explained the food of the north.
The size of the group comes up too. Some reviewers describe small groups that made it easy to share dishes and talk, and one family describes a guide who made sure there was something for everyone in the family at every stop.

View tourQuick · the seasons
Chiang Mai cools down from November to February, TAT says, with crisp air that makes being outdoors more comfortable. Those are the easiest months for an evening at the markets, and January averages just 11 mm of rain.
April is the hottest month on the WMO normals, with an average high of 36.7 °C. The tour starts in the early evening, after the worst of the heat, but water and a light shirt make a real difference.
Thailand's weather service dated the onset of the 2026 rains to May 15, and August is the wettest month on the normals. A light jacket is worth packing from May to October.

Quick · on the plate
Every night is a little different, but some dishes define the north. Khao soi, a creamy yellow curry soup with egg noodles and chicken, is the one TAT calls the city's most famous. Sai ua is the herb-packed northern sausage, and chili dips come with crispy pork and boiled vegetables.
Khanom chin, fresh rice noodles with curry, is a market staple, and the tour's own listing names it. Stewed pork leg and coconut dumplings round out the sample dishes the listing gives, savoury and sweet.
Pork runs through northern cooking. TAT calls the local pork famous, fermented, fried or cured, and says nearly every Thai visitor goes home with crispy pork rind. If you avoid pork, tell the operator when you book.

Quick · ordering in thai
The tour comes with a leaflet of the most popular street food dishes, written so you can practise ordering in Thai. The guide helps at each stop, and by the end of the evening the words for the dishes you liked come easily.
A few habits help. Point and smile, ask for mild if chili worries you, and order small amounts at several stalls rather than a big plate at one. Sticky rice is eaten with your fingers, and noodles with a spoon and chopsticks together.
Keep the leaflet. On the nights after the tour it turns any market into a menu you can read, and that is where the tour pays for itself.
The guide's Chiang Mai list
The MICHELIN Guide lists 54 restaurants in and around Chiang Mai.
18 of them hold a Bib Gourmand for good value cooking, and 6 are classed as street food. None holds a star; the city's guide-listed street food is cheap and quick.
Quick · what to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended in the listing, and the markets are on foot even when the transfers are by car. Light clothes suit the evenings for most of the year, with a rain jacket from May to October.
Bring small cash. Alcohol is sold separately and tips are not included, and a few small notes make both easy. Bottled water is provided on the tour.
Above all, bring an appetite. Eat a light lunch and nothing in the late afternoon; at least 8 dishes add up quickly.
The practical part
Quick · your guide
The tour is led by a local guide in English, and the group is capped at 8. A small table means the guide can order for everyone, answer questions at every stop and adjust to the group's spice tolerance.
The listing asks you to state dietary requirements when you book. Mention allergies and anything you do not eat; the guide plans stops with that in mind, within the limits of street food.
The operator is Chiang Mai Street Food Tours, and the tour is sold on Viator. Your contract is with them; this site is an independent guide that links to the listing.
2.5 hours, up to 3. It lasts between 2.5 and 3 hours depending on the size of the group.
Yes. The guide collects you at your Chiang Mai accommodation by private vehicle and drops you back at about 9:30 to 10 pm.
From $40. Viator quotes it per person as a starting figure; your date's live price shows at checkout.
At least 8. Savoury and sweet, at two or more evening markets.
Water is, alcohol is not. Bottled water is included; alcoholic drinks can be bought separately.
No. Its listing rules out vegetarians; a cooking class is the better choice.
Yes, from age 5 at the child price. The child band covers ages 5 to 15; the tour is not suitable for infants.
Up to 8 people. The group is capped at 8, led by a local guide in English.
Yes, up to 24 hours before. A cancellation made at least 24 hours ahead of the start is refunded in full.
Check the forecast and your options. Rain is common from May to October; the operator may cancel for poor weather, and you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead.
Quick · on your own
After the tour, the city is yours. TAT points to the Wua Lai and Sunday walking streets for regional dishes such as khao soi, and to the Night Bazaar for crafts, lanterns and textiles. Warorot, the oldest market in the city, is the place to see ingredients by day.
The guide-listed stalls make easy targets. Roti Pa Day by Wat Mahawan cooks from 18:30 to midnight, and Khao Soi Mae Sai serves its guide-listed khao soi from 08:00 to 16:00, except on Sunday.
For a day in the kitchen instead, the organic farm cooking class sold on this site lets you cook a dish in each of 5 categories, every dish possible vegetarian or vegan, from $28. Our guides compare the classes, markets and dishes in more detail.

Quick · is it for you
It suits first-time visitors who want to start the trip well fed, solo travelers who want company at dinner, couples and families with older children. It is a Chiang Mai foodie tour for people who like to try everything once.
It does not suit vegetarians: the listing says so plainly. It is not suitable for infants either, and pickups from outside the city may cost extra. If you eat no meat, a cooking class where every dish can be made vegetarian is the better evening out.
If you want more tastings and a longer night, a 4-hour truck tour promises 15+; if you want to choose your own stalls, the walking streets are free to explore. For an easy, well-fed first evening with transport handled, this tour is the simple choice.
